Wolf Burner Cap

The burner cap is the removable top of a Wolf sealed burner, and it does more than cover it: on the dual-stacked design the simmer flame moves to a second tier on the cap. It must sit flat and centred over the burner for the gas to light cleanly and burn in an even ring.

What We Usually Find · Market

  1. Most often

A cap put back a fraction off-centre, or tilted, after the top was cleaned. From above it looks right, yet the burner lights slowly, clicks on after lighting or burns lopsided.

  2. Often

Water trapped under the cap after a wipe-down or a boil-over, which stops the burner lighting properly until it has dried.

  3. Sometimes

On burners whose cap fastens to the head, a cap that has worked loose. Wolf's troubleshooting simply says to check that it is tight.

  4. Rarely

A cap chipped, bent or warped by a hard knock or a fall, which will never sit flat again however carefully it is placed.

What it means for the repair

Most cap problems cost nothing but a minute: lifted, dried and set down flat, the burner behaves again. When a cap is the reason we are called, we still check every cap on the top, the ports beneath each one and the electrode beside it, because a cap that refuses to seat is sometimes resting on something. A cap that is chipped or warped is replaced with a genuine part ordered for that burner and your serial number.

Before you call

With the burners off and cool, lift each cap and look underneath. Dry anything wet; Wolf suggests a hair dryer on a low setting if you want it done faster. Set each cap back so it sits flat and centred, using a burner that works as your reference for how it should look. Where a cap fastens to its head, make sure it is tight. If the burner still lights badly after that, Wolf Repair Kirkland is on (425) 699-2400.

In Market kitchens

The Market neighbourhood, just north of downtown, mixes early twentieth-century houses with careful restorations, and the Wolf ranges in those kitchens tend to be cooked on daily and cleaned just as often. Every clean is a chance to set a cap back slightly out of true. In Market, a burner that suddenly stopped lighting cleanly is more often a cap than any other part.

What it costs to put right

No set band for this one — Wolf Repair Kirkland quotes it after the diagnosis, as one figure for parts and labour.

A flat $89 pays for the visit and the whole diagnosis; approve the repair and that $89 comes off its price.

Asked about this one

How do I know if my Wolf burner cap is seated properly?

A seated cap sits flat, does not rock when touched, and is centred over the burner so the ring of flame is even all the way round. Compare it with a burner that lights well. If a cap will not settle flat even when clean and dry, it may be damaged; Wolf Repair Kirkland, (425) 699-2400, can check it against your range.

Why does my burner burn unevenly since I cleaned the cooktop?

An uneven flame straight after cleaning usually means a cap sitting slightly off-centre or tilted, or water still trapped beneath it. Turn the burner off, let it cool, lift the cap, dry underneath and set it back flat. If one side still burns low after that, the ports below the cap may be partly blocked.
